Ornella wants you to know that her adoption fee is now temporary $75 instead of $100!!! - please share the news

The Goathouse Refuge was awarded a grant from the Best Friends Animal Society (http://bestfriends.org/) to help us promote our adoptions, and they are sponsoring $25 for the first 100 cat adoptions!!!

Our kitties get combo tested, get both their FVCRP shots, their Rabies, Spay/Neuter surgery, and microchip - their normal adoption fee doesn't even come close to covering all of this (plus food and care), but now you can get all this vetting done + one (or more) of the most wonderful loving kitties to take home, for only $75.

Please consider adopting from the Goathouse!

Cats of the Week Aylis and Tiziano

Goathouse friends, can you please help us find homes for our sweet FeLV+ kitties? Cats of the Week Aylis and Tiziano have both tested positive for FeLV and so must stayed caged even though they are friendly, affectionate cats that love people. They need homes where they would be the only cats (although they could live with other FeLV+ cats). They are so eager for attention, and do not understand why they cannot be out with the other cats and people. Please, can you help us find them homes? Cats can live normal lives with FeLV; here is some information about it.http://bestfriends.org/News-And-Features/News/Feline-leukemia-misconceptions/

Cat of the Week: Regan

Cat of the Week Regan is a familiar face to Goathouse visitors! With her distinctive grey head and wide-set eyes, Regan is easily identifiable and she enjoys being with both other kitties and people. Regan originally came from NY with a colony of eighteen cats that the refuge took in when their owner passed away. Many of those cats have been adopted, but Regan remains with us, though she's such a friendly and gracious girl! Regan loves to be brushed and she loves caring for the other cats. She's a nurturing, gentle girl who would take good care of her people!

Meet the new Cat of the Week, Callie! Callie is COTW just in time for Mother's Day--she came to the refuge five years ago after having kittens. Callie has been waiting a long time for her own home, and she is a sponsored cat, which means her adoption is FREE! Callie is super cute, gets along well with other cats, and is READY for her forever home!

Chino is an affectionate fellow with striking sea-green eyes, and he would love to have a family of his own. Just imagine seeing that adorable grouchy face every morning, with lots of love to go with it!

Cat of the Week: Guido

This is Guido, the Goathouse Cat of the Week! Three years ago, the refuge rescued Guido from death in a county shelter. Since then, he has been patiently waiting to find his forever home. He's a big boy with an easy going nature, and he would love to have his own family.

Cat of the Week: Cammie

Good afternoon! I am Cammie, the Goathouse Cat of the Week! I am around five years old and I like to hang out in the refuge building. I have a meow that has been compared to a frog's croak, and every once in a while, someone asks if I am pregnant, but I am NOT! I just have big bones! Anyway, I hope that my day will come soon, as I have been at the refuge a long time and I would really love to have my own family.

Carpy and Jr are 12 year old Orange/white and Tabby cats who needs a new home. Carpy and Jr are Indoor only. These cats are located in Hope Mills, NC 28348.

Carpy is a very friendly female cat. She loves exploring her surroundings and very curious about people around her. Jr is a shy male cat, but once he gets to know you and the surroundings, he is the most cuddly cat you can find. They have been together for 12 years. They both do not have any healthy issues. They are very loving to each other. An ideal home for them will be someone who is willing to take them both and has no other pets at home.

I have came to the consideration of cat shelters.

Sweet yellow and beige cat needs a new home. This cat is located in Efland, NC 27243.

The cat is very sweet and loving to all it comes in contact with. It loves to rub against anyone who allows this. It tries to get in the house so appears to have been at least partially a house cat. It looked healthy and well taken care of when it appeared. It seems to be fairing well outdoors on it's own yet still longs for the companionship of people and to come inside. It did get scratched on it's back once since arriving here but seems to have healed fine thus another indication of being healthy. Everyone who sees the cat feel drawn to it and immediately recognizes it's pretty appearance & gentle loving sweet nature. I would post a picture but do not have the ability to do this. I think the cat would make a great pet for anyone except someone whom it might be dangerous for the cat to get under their feet and cause them to fall as it does like to follow along as one walks and can get under foot.

Reason for surrender: My niece who has Down syndrome & whom I am guardian of is not comfortable around animals and I have allergies to cat hair. So we will never be able to keep the cat ourselves but I think it would make a good pet for someone who loves cats.

Cat of the Week: Cookie

Hello, my name is Cookie and I am the Goathouse Cat of the Week! I came to the Goathouse in the summer of 2009 with my kittens. Blackie is a approx 1 year old American shorthair - Black cat who needs a new home. Blackie weighs 6.5 lb. This cat is located in Beulaville, NC 28518.

Blackie is a short-haired, black female cat who is approx. 1 yr old. She was a stray who found her way to my home about 3 months ago. She is very friendly and affectionate. She loves to snuggle up to you in a chair or on the bed. She has never shown any signs of aggression to people or other cats - even when the other cat hissed at her. She is very sweet and loves attention. She is litter box trained and has a good appetite. She is happy to be indoors but enjoys some time outdoors as well to run and play. She has beautiful eyes and would be a great addition to any home.

Reason for surrender: I need to surrender Blackie so that she may find a good permanent home. I already have a cat named Grandma who is older and not a fan of other cats, so the plan for Blackie has always been to stay with me until a permanent home is found. This is now an immediate need because my sister has been diagnosed with cancer and must have surgery and treatment which will mean being away from home for an extended period of time and I will not be able to care for Blackie any longer. I need to know Blackie is cared for so that I can take care of my sister. Please help Blackie find a home. Thank you so very much.

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Mrs. White is a 2 year old white, shorthair cat with a tabby patch of calico on face and tail, who needs a new home. Mrs. White weighs approx 7 lbs. This cat is located in Mebane NC 27302.

Mrs. White is one of three capture/spay/neuter/release cats that live in our neighborhood. They seem to go their separate ways in the woods behind my house during the day but I often see them if I look outside. Mrs. White is timid, will run if dogs, people come in my yard. She is content to sleep at night in a Kitty tube residence on my patio. beside the kitty tubes homes of two other cats, Sister Mary Margaret and Max Black. These cats have been ferals in the community for at least 2 summers now. They appear healthy, love to eat, drink from the birdbath even though they have water bowls. They greet me every morning at the backdoor with boundless energy and enthusiasm. They swipe against my legs as we head down the hill to their feeding spot at edge of woods. Mrs. White and her friends would love to find a home together as outdoor kitties. I will gladly be sure their shots are updated, they are healthy. Their homes can go with them. I fear neighbors that think feral cats are not special will have animal control trap them in next few wks. I hope to be able to send pictures of them this wk.that includes closeups, The one I am sending via email from my phone is a more distant shot with them heading in opposite directions as I raised my cameraphone.

Contact Janice J. at janmariejohns@gmail.com, Cell 336-314-9110, Home 919-304-3237.

Are you the owner: Cat has been in woods and neighborhood for over a year. Just began coming in my yard since Nov 2012
Reason for surrender: Mrs. White has been neutered in Chapel Hill by volunteers in the community. I have been feeding since Nov 2012. She appears healthy and loves to perch in trees. She gets along with 2 other cats, also ferals. They feed together and I have purchased 3 kitty tubes (TheKittyTube.com) that are on my patio with heating pads in each. A neighbor's dog chased a cat, not necessarily one of these and he grabbed the dog and fell. He appeared on my doorstep to expound on the evils of feral cats.
How did you acquire: They acquired me. I have 5 indoor cats so cannot bring another in to my declawed family.

Community Listing: Lewis

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Lewis is a 14 year old brown and white tabby cat who needs a new home. Lewis weighs 14 lbs. This cat is located in Chapel Hill NC 27516.

Lewis is a VERY friendly kitty who is used to a lively household. He is incredibly gentle and loves attention, even from noisy kids who would cause most kitties to run away. Nothing provokes him to scratch a person. He is a big snuggly boy who likes nothing better than to curl up in your lap or share naptime by your side. He is sociable with people and friendly to other cats, and I have a feeling he would be friendly with dogs too. Even my friends who don't like cats have loved Lewis!

He has lived most of his life indoors, but since coming to my farmhouse three months ago he has discovered the fun of the outdoors, though he still eats, sleeps and uses the litterbox inside. He's a healthy senior with no problems I've seen apart from not being a great jumper with his back legs. He runs, climbs stairs and climbs onto the sofa or my bed, but he doesn't jump onto other furniture. And he still likes to play, especially with his wand toy!

Lewis would be a perfect addition to any family, whether a single person (like myself) or a big family. He's one of those rare cats who loves children (instead of fearing or tolerating them) so he's an excellent family pet. He's used to being an only cat, but he has also gotten used to living with my other four cats, often grooming them while they nap together.

Lewis comes with his own big cat carrier, litterbox and favorite wand toy, and I will get him up to date on his vaccines. He'll be a wonderful addition to your family!

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Sita is a 13 year old Persian/other mix, primarily white, black tail cat who needs a new home. Sita weighs 10 pounds. This cat is located in Prospect Hill, NC 27314.

Sita is a neutered female cat adopted in Alaska in January, 2001. She is mostly Persian with a half-helmet of gray-and-black fur and a black tail. She has been moved with us several times over the years, to Florida (she hunkered down in her cat carrier on the plane like a jackass in a hurricane), to Tennessee, and then to North Carolina. She lives both inside and outside, more so one or the other depending on the weather. She has adjusted to and gotten along well with dogs we had had over the years and to a couple cats we housed temporarily after a period of adjustment. She is territorial with the home and challenges strays but is not an aggressive constant fighter. She pretty much stays on the property. We are looking into a diet to eliminate dander that may be causing my wife's exacerbated allergies but are putting out the "feelers" to see if someone could take her either temporarily or if unsucessful, permanently.

Reason for surrender: We are trying not to surrender entirely. My wife was diagnosed allergic to cats years ago but we kept her, but my wife's allergies have gotten worse and will have further allergy testing in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Monty & Taco are two 7 month old White/black & White/Orange cats who needs a new home. They are Indoor only. These cats are located in Carrboro NC 27510.

Monty and Taco are incredibly sweet, friendly, and social brothers who have always grown up together. They love to play with toys and jump to catch things in the air, and can be pretty vocal. They are playful with each other and stay quite active even as indoor cats. Monty and Taco love to be together but I bet they'd also be fine on their own, as their personalities compliment each other yet can stand alone. They have been trained to stay off of counter tops, furniture, and beds, and they respond well to discipline when necessary. They are the sweetest and most playful cats I've ever owned! I know they would transition easily into a new home.

Juliette is a 2 year old gray Blue Russian cat who needs a new home. Juliette weighs b/w 8-10 lbs and is Indoor only. This cat is located in Fuquay Varina NC 27526

Juliette is a shy cat around most people. She tends to find certain people she likes and sticks to them. Once she likes you, though, there is no escape. She will follow you around the house, she will talk to you, she will even sleep beside you. She will act as an alarm clock if you don't hear yours the first time, she will roll around on you to get your attention, and she does not like anyone on the phone and at the computer at the same time. She's not aggressive at all, just very quirky. I loved her very much and am going to miss her, but I believe she will make a great addition to someone's home.

Romeo is a 9 year old black cat who needs a new home. Romeo weighs between 10-15 lbs. This cat is located in Fuquay Varina, NC.

Romeo is a very loving cat. I rescued him as a stray because he appeared to have been hit by a car and his hips healed wrong. He walks a little funny but has full nerve function according to the vet. He is a very strange cat to me because he is super co- dependant and will actually come running when you call his name. He probably has the loudest purr I have ever heard. He has been an interesting and pleasant part of our family, but we just aren't allowed to take him when we move, and I feel he would do another family some good.

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Zod is a 10 year old Abyssinian Mix / tabby cat who needs a new home. Zod weighs ~9 lbs and is Indoor only. This cat is located in Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Zod is an awesome cat. He is very affectionate and incredibly playful, we are constantly laughing at his antics. He unfortunately ended up in the shelter when his owner's life changed. Marleys Cat Tales stepped up to save him. Zod is living with 4 other cats and 9 dogs and is doing fantastic. He takes everything in stride and nothing seems to phase him. Zod is incredibly affectionate and loving and quite the character. If you are ready to laugh, a lot, then Zod is the kitty for you! We would love for Zod to have a home of his own. If interested, please email us at turtlepantsfarm@gmail.com.

Zod is good with Cats: Yes, Dogs: Yes, Kids: Unknown

Contact Jeremi C. at turtlepantsfarm@gmail.com, 919-618-8878.

Are you the owner: I rescued him from Wake County Shelter a year ago
Reason for surrender: We own 5 dogs and 5 cats. Zod gets along great with our dogs and 4 of the cats but for some reason hates our 14 yr old cat, Debo. He randomly attacks her to the point that our dogs jump in. Debo has now been attacked by our dogs 3 times. I have had Debo since she was 8 weeks old and she has never had problems with other dogs or cats. We have tried pheromone plug ins and locking Zod up (he tries to tear down doors if put up). So now Debo has to live in the bathroom alone for her own protection. Zod is a foster cat. We never took him for ourselves. He has been on petfinder the entire time with no interest. I am assuming it is because of his age. He is incredibly friendly to humans and the rest of the crew but is quirky. He is obsessed with the sink in the kitchen. When we first got Zod we had more foster dogs. We have since taken a break from rescue (after 10 years) so that I could focus on grad school and give my current animals a break. We have an 18 yr old cat too. I am willing to pay for upkeep of Zod or "trade" for a feral barn cat, if you have one.

Community Listing: Jacob

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Jacob is a 6 year old Orange cat who needs a new home. Jacob weighs 10-15 pounds. This cat is located in Clayton, NC 27527.

Jacob is a very loving cat. He loves to curl up on a bed and sleep the day away. He also loves to be outside and play. He is new to being an outdoor cat so he doesn't know all the "rules" or have all the street smarts that most outside cats have. I think the ideal home would be someone who needs a good mouser and has some property for him to run on. Not a home near a highway. He likes to come and go as he pleases so a cat door would be good for him.
Jacob is good with Cats: No, Dogs: Unknown, Kids: Yes

Contact Jodi S. at cuppacoffee4me@gmail.com, Cell 919-621-9142, Home 919-879-8395.

Are you the owner: Yes
Reason for surrender: When we adopted him we wanted an indoor only cat and he has wanted to be an outdoor cat. He has recently started to urinate on all our furniture until we allowed him to be an outdoor cat. Since it is cold outside we do allow him back in at night. He is a sweet cat that sleeps on my son's bed. Which is our other problem. My son is allergic to cats and that is another reason to find him a home that is better suited to him.

Are you the owner: no - she showed up on our doorstep several days ago - we have posted flyers and went door-to-door to locate an owner. We're informed by neighbors that she is a stray.
Reason for surrender: We have two cats and one dog in the household right now. One cat is close to 20 yrs old and in renal failure. Both my husband and I were laid off from our jobs this past year and are squeaking by on a tight budget (with three kids to feed in addition to the current pets). We would love to keep her because she has such a sweet disposition, but with the possibility of losing our housing by this summer due to lack of work, we don't feel it would be appropriate to adopt her at this time.

Pumpkin is a 2-3 year old Orange and White Tabby cat who needs a new home. Pumpkin weighs 14 pounds. This cat is located in Apex, NC 27523.

This cat was clearly feral when he first came to me. I have been working with him every day to socialize him to become adoptable. I trapped him, had him neutered and given a rabies shot, and ear-cropped. Over time, he has become extremely friendly not only with me, but with my kids. He now lets me pick him up, and he tries to get into the house ALL the time! He is ready for a permanent loving home and family. The ideal situation would be someone who is familiar with shy cats, and a home where he can have access to the outdoors. He would make a great barn cat, but also craves love and attention from humans.

Reason for surrender: My son has gotten MRSA staph infection back in July and is suseptable to infections from scratches he receives. He is 17 months old and VERY curious and I am fearful with his allergies. Lilly is an indoor cat, however, she snuck out through our garage approx 3 weeks ago and I do not want her back in the house until she is seen by a vet, however, we just cannot afford to take her. I just don't feel our home is best for her with my son's allergies. Although cats are great pets, my son's well being is what we are most concerned about. We have tried many shelters but of course all are at capacity and right now Lilly is still outside as I dont feel comfortable letting her back in.

Isabella is a 6 year old Gray cat who needs a new home. Isabella weighs 11 lbs and is Indoor only. This cat is located in Durham NC 27707.

Isabella is beautiful, unique cat. She likes to spend her time looking out the window, and sitting in her owner's lap. Shy at first. But will warm up over time. Likes a good rubbing, but not a cat that likes to be carried around. She and my other cat were having pee wars. However my male cat was the more obvious offender. She may have also contributed. Would be great as an only pet. Or perhaps with another low key cat. Though she is shy at first, I suspect she would like to be the alpha animal. Indoors only. Please consider adopting her. To keep the peace I am boarding her at the vets. You can visit her anytime at Triangle Vets on Old Chapel Hill Rd. Durham NC 919-489-2391. I am co-owner of Isabella with Dr. Mari Juergenson.

Mr Kitty is a 4 year old White cat who needs a new home. This cat is located in Chapel Hill NC 27516.

Mr Kitty is a wonderful cat. He is around 4yrs old. He is great around other cats/dogs. Mr Kitty does like kids however not any children under 5 yrs old. Every child that has been around him under 5 has always grabbed him too hard and tends to choke him. Of course I do not allow this to happen but my one year old nephew is fast. Mr Kitty has to be an indoor/outdoor cat. He is not happy unless he can go outside. He Kitty has had issues going outside and fighting with stray cats or squarels. He really preferrs to be outside mostly but comes back every day or sometimes the next morning and eat, sleep, then back outside he goes. I absolutely LOVE Mr Kitty however I don't want to neglect him because of my own selfishness. I think the ideal home for Mr Kitty is definately somewhere he can be outside just as much as inside.

Mr. McGoo is a ~10 year old Orange and white cat who needs a new home. Mr. McGoo weighs 6.9 lbs. This cat is located in Apex, NC 27523.

Mr. McGoo is a wonderful cat who sits at my top set begging to leave the garage and join the inside world. Even when he showed up in my driveway, starving, he was sweet and gentle. He ate his Fancy Feast and didn't flinch when my toddler squealed with delight. He showed no aggression at the vet and they became fast friends after a few treats. All he wants to do is purr in my arms. I don't know how he reacts to other animals, but he is good with kids. Ideally, he would be an indoor only cat with a person with a warm lap.

Community Listing: Lucy

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Lucy is a 9 year old British Tortoiseshell cat who needs a new home. Lucy weighs ~14 lbs and is Indoor only. This cat is located in Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Please help this British Tortoiseshell find a happy home. She has been very shy from the start and has overcome many difficulties since being rescued from an abusive, chaotic home eight years ago. This nine-year old cat is loving and chatty, likes to chase the laser mousie and enjoys catnip. When our home is quiet, she ventures forth to request petting and likes to talk back when you talk to her. Unfortunately, her personality does not mesh well with another cat of ours (another rescue) and we have come to see that she would ultimately be very happy in a single cat home. She would be a grateful, wonderful "starter cat" for a first time cat owner. After the hard upbringing she's had, and the current state of unhappiness she is in, we would love to see her end her days in relative contentment, rather than misery. Please consider her. We would be happy to take her to the vet and make certain she is in perfect health and fully up-to-date on any shots prior to giving her to your loving home. We want what's best for her, and we realize that that cannot happen with us. Maybe it can happen with you?

Timmy is a friendly cat, but very independent. He likes to snuggle and be petted, but at his own discretion. He gets along nicely with other cats but can display dominance. He like to communicate in his own way to let you know he is in need of something by a meow or directing you to his food bowl. NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

Boudicca is a 7 year old American Shorthair cat who needs a new home. Boudicca is Indoor only. This cat is located in Reidsville NC 27320. Her guardians are willing to transport her to her new home.

Boudicca is a GREAT companion kitty. She's a talker, she loves to play with teasers, she loves being in your lap while you are on the PC or watching TV or reading. She follows you about the house - she's a GREAT cat, friendly, funny, very lovely, we think. Her IDEAL HOME would be where she would be an only kitty so she could "rule the roost" and not feel threatened or intimidated by other felines.

MORE PHOTOS ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST! Whoever adopts this kitty will REALLY never regret it!

Are you the owner: Yes
Reason for surrender: We have tried to integrate Boudicca into our house with our other four cats but she has a "vendetta" against one of them in particular (this cat has only one eye and we think that might be setting her off). We've tried everything, from behavior modification tips that people have given us to ... well, everything. She just has it in for my one-eyed black kitty and we feel that Boudicca would be MOST happy being in a home where she can be an "only kitty". She gets along with some of our other cats well but there are small issues with them too, which leads us to believe that, really, she'd be happiest where she could be Queen Bee and get all the attention! She's a talker, she'll follow you around the house, loves to be in your lap - she's a GREAT companion & we really DO want to see her get the right home!

NOTE: This cat is in need from the community. This is listed as a courtesy, and the animal does not live at the Refuge. The Goathouse Refuge is not responsible for any problems with the animals or with the adoption process. Please contact the owner directly for more information.

9 year old lynx point Siamese mix cat needs a new home. This cat is located in Weaverville, NC.

This kitty and her brother (orange tabby) were brought to our office on 1/22/13, the Animal Hospital at Reems Creek in Weaverville, NC for euthanasia for urinating in the house. We obviously did not euthanize them, but now are in a situation where we cannot seek rescue for them locally, for obvious reasons.  Both are doing fine using their boxes in their cages, and both a normal urinalysis.

The female is the gray one. According to her record, she will be 9 in March. She is overweight with a short tail.  Had no significant findings on urinalysis.  Rabies and Feline Leukemia vax are due July 2013 and FVRCP 3 year is due July 2015.  She is frightened here and stays in her litter box most of the time.  She is sweet and nice to us, just scared I think.
